Have you tried Bowen therapy?

Bowen is a gentle, relaxing treatment that is performed over clothing. It is suitable for people of all ages and levels of mobility, including babies and expectant mothers.

Bowen does not hurt

Bowen is not forceful at all. Light rolling moves are made at precise points on the body - with quiet periods of rest in between. It works with the body in a gentle way, introducing changes that your body adapts and adjusts to in the days or weeks after your treatment. It allows your body to do its own healing in its own time. Many people find it deeply relaxing - a real chance to shut off from the stresses and strains of daily life.

Bowen can help with a wide range of symptoms

Bowen is holistic - this means it treats you as a whole, rather than named conditions or problems. For example, shoulder pain can sometimes be helped with treatment in other areas of the body. This means that, even if a problem area is too painful to touch, you may still be helped with treatment elsewhere on your body. This is the real beauty of Bowen.

Examples of the types of conditions that may respond well to Bowen can be found on the Bowen Therapy Professional Association website.

Bowen works with the soft tissues of the body

Soft tissue is everything in the body that is not bone. With Bowen, the particular soft tissues we work over are connective tissue, muscles, tendons, fascia, ligaments, and nerves. There are no hard or forceful moves, no cracking or crunching, no manipulations, no oils or creams are used. It is simple, gentle and pain-free.

Your appointment

Your appointment will last about an hour (a little longer for your first visit). You will be invited to discuss any health problems, and will be left in privacy to make yourself comfortable on the couch. Seated treatments are also possible for people with limited mobility. The room is kept warm for your comfort, and you will be covered in fleece blankets.

Drink plenty of water!

After treatment

You will be encouraged to observe any changes you experience in the few days following your appointment and will be asked to support your treatment by drinking plenty of water. This helps to keep your body hydrated and assist it with toxin removal. You may also be given some very simple exercises to do.

How many treatments?

Bowen is not normally given as a "one-off" - although you may achieve noticeable change after just one treatment it is usual to have a course of three treatments at weekly intervals in the first instance. After that, you will be able to decide how you would like to proceed - some people don't need to come back, some choose to return for maintenance treatment every month or two, or have the occasional top-up treatment. Everybody is different, but a general rule of thumb is that if you have had the condition for a long time, it is likely you may require more treatments to achieve lasting improvement.

Bowen for babies and children

Children seem to really enjoy Bowen, and many ask to come back for more treatment because they find it helpful. I co-founded a lottery-funded children's Bowen clinic in 2006 and am experienced in treating children of all ages.

Please bear in mind that the law requires that a child must have been seen by a mainstream health professional for the particular condition before consulting a complementary therapist for treatment. Parental consent is required for the treatment of any young person under the age of sixteen, and the parent/guardian will be asked to remain in the room throughout the treatment. For your peace of mind, I have undergone enhanced disclosure through the Criminal Records Bureau.

Please note:

Bowen Therapy is not a substitute for medical treatment. Always consult your general practitioner or a health professional for medical attention and advice.
